Lucky Country

Margaret Pomeranz gives ‘Lucky Country’ 4 stars!

Posted by Renee Crea 17th July

Last night on At The Movies Margaret Pomeranz gave us a wonderful, 4 star review. Here’s a snippet of what she had to say:

“There is something intensely Australian about this film, it’s as if it’s seeking to penetrate some essence of where we’ve come from and who we are. Andy Cox’s screenplay is both poetic and dramatic.

Performances are universally impressive, the children, HANNA MANGAN-LAWRENCE and TOBY WALLACE are really outstanding. Kriv Stenders has brought an appropriate leanness to the direction and visually the muted palette from cinematographer Jules O’Loughlin is just perfect for the times it depicts.

This film made such a strong connection with me, I responded to it emotionally, intellectually, and I was incredibly moved by it.”

I thought the kids' performances were great but had problems with the fact the house/hut/cottage kept appearing with differences to its background. and how come we heard chickens one morning, way into the movie, when they'd been no indication of livestock beforehand. And since when have small holders had no serious amounts of cleared land around, and kept their firewood in a lockable locker? come on, get real
and since when have work camps had nothing in view indicating what they were working at sleepers? fence wire?
yes, Ms Pomerantz this was LEAN - annoying. and how cut was the editing so the way information hopped around among protagonists was impossible to follow. jump here jump there.
yeah the countryside was well depicted, yes the acting was fine, but was it editing chops or lack of attention to continuity that created problems.
Perhaps I saw a badly chopped version of the film?
  • It seems like there's mixed reviews... but I thought it was great. I obviously have the same perspective as Margaret!

Make up your mind - as the film is in cinemas right now.
